First, I have to admit that I don’t know the general nature regarding how little girls play since I am the mother of boys, and growing up I was something of a tomboy myself. However, if I had to hazard a guess I would imagine it doesn’t (or at least usually doesn’t) involve guns, swords, lightsabers and etcetera.
A question I often find running threw my head is, is everything a weapon? Lego gets built into guns or swords. The boys love visiting a particular friend’s house because they have lots of nerf guns that either make noise or flash lights and they have a number of lightsabers. There is running coupled with the sounds of little voice yelling bang bang. However, this takes me right back to my weapons question. The list isn’t limited to spoons, sticks, brooms, and toothbrushes as weapons; it stretches to just about any object because when the mood strikes anything becomes a weapon of opportunity.
The jury is out on whether this is normal. Somethings you read say yes, some indicate it’s a stage, and some plain out say no. I don’t know. They are playing and having fun. Occasionally it gets a bit out of hand, but that can happen with any activity. They aren’t attacking people in the streets so…
Seriously, is everything a weapon? I find my younger boy is ingenious with his ability to turn random objects into weapons particularly to bop, poke, or find some way to terrorize his older brother. I can watch him from the corner of my eye and see the glimmer of mischief take over his persona as he turns a stuffed animal around and around in his hands casting thoughtful glances from it to his brother. At this point he knows if I’m moving his way that he’s been busted. His little hands and the offending object disappear behind his back. “Not a weapon Mommy,” he says in a voice dripping with mock innocents. Good grief my inside voice mumbles.
That said, there is something to be said for a good controlled lightsaber battled in a dark living room while the lightsabers glow and make noises as they slide through the air.

Oh, it was all bows, swords, and lightsabers for me too when I was a little girl 😀 Society encourages boys more to do so, but I don’t think it’s an innate difference.

Bows, swords, and lightsabers are so much fun.

The answer is ‘yes’ 🙂 I have a boy and a girl, and even though my daughter is a tomboy, there are inate differences between the two…like some stuff is just hardwired in them. My daughter always wanted to build things with the legos. My son was more interested in destroying it all LOL My nephew does the same thing. I asked my mother-in-law, who raised 4 boys, if all the was normal…she assures me it is 🙂

Thanks for visiting my blog. And thank you for sharing your own parenting experiences from a Mother’s perspective with a boy and girl. I laughed because there is definitely a love of smashing lego and anything else they build.

Yes, everything is a weapon. Even well into their teens. At 19, I think it might be slowly starting to wear off. Maybe.
I have one of each, and while they are different kids altogether, they play much they same as far as volume and swaths of destruction. Meaning they’re both quiet and messy.

Well, maybe not *everything,* but I remember that we started our boys off very carefully with no toy guns or the like. Then one day we read them “Little House in the Big Woods.” In which Papa goes hunting. Poof. The next stick they found was a gun. They’ve done lots of battles with “swords” and even now (as the teens are nearly done) love to get together with friends for big battles with the nerf guns.
And me? Well, I had endless gunfights with my brothers. We even made wooden pistols that fired rubber bands–perfect for mowing down ranks of toy soldiers. But, then, I’m not sure I knew I was a girl.

Yes, we started off without the guns to, but the still go the idea from somewhere. Nerf guns are the new thing, and my older boy even went to a nerf gun party (He was the only one that didn’t have his own gun).

Well, I don’t have kids, but I do have older brothers. Even though I was also a tomboy (high five!), I just really couldn’t compare with my brother in terms destruction. Left on my own, I probably would have happily just played in a mud puddle somewhere. But in cahoots with my brother, well, there were pillow fights, rubber band shooting, “gun” fights, and those are just the ones I remember. 😛
