Coffee & Comfort

The scent of vanilla is just an undertone to the rich coffee smell. It is surprising how the vanilla adds notes of sweetness to the smell that one would expect to carry through into the flavour. However, that first sip does not reveal anything other than a smooth black coffee. Today I am tasting Hamilton Mills Vanilla Bean flavoured coffee. I don’t mind it; it is comforting and satisfying, what more can I say? It is a nice sip.

If we were having coffee I would share that this week has seen a lot of storytelling at the dinner table. My boys are on a scary story telling kick. It’s been a lot of fun and definitely a highlight this week. Of course they asked me to participate and so I started off with the words, “Last year in the news…” The coals notes of my story involve a mysterious pumpkin patch opening in small town just outside the city. Nobody is welcome in the patch until October 28. This patch boasts the best pumpkins ever and says the jack-o-lanterns are so life like. I include a side story of missing persons from the city. The connection is that the pumpkins in this mysterious patch are actually the missing person’s heads and there are skulls lit up like jack-o-lanterns…

If we were having coffee I would confess that there was payback for this spooky story that I told the children. It was shortly after 8. My husband was out of town. The boys were in bed. The house is quiet. I am sitting doing a puzzle. Suddenly there is 6 or 7 loud fast footsteps directly behind me and arms go around me. I nearly came out of my skin! Luckily before my fight response kicked in I realized that the clinging arms belonged to my younger son who had moved with stealth like ability from her bed upstairs at the far end of the house to find me and then charged at me in a panic trying to flee from all the scary stories pieces floating around in his head. I am happy to say that after setting up a small army of stuffed animals to guard he drifted off to sleep and slept the night through.

If we were having coffee I would tell you that I shifted gears from my reading list to puzzling. I finished the first 4 on the list and I am part way into The Big Kahuna but I think that The Voyage of Jerle Shannara trilogy will be started closer to the new year if not in the new year.

If we were having coffee I would ask you about your week as I pass you the coffee pot.

  1. I Love all the coffee flavors you’ve been trying! They sound good, and I like it when my coffee is smooth to the taste! I would have nightmares too with scary stories, haha, tis the season, sounds fun! And I love puzzles, you’ll have to share when you’ve completed!
I hope to write a coffee share tomorrow as you pass the pot around! Have a great weekend! ❤️

  2. OMG I’d have had to been peeled off the ceiling! Haha.. I love spooky story time.. I actually just did a flash fiction challenge from another blogger.. I don’t think it was too shabby for never really writing fiction.. Thanks for the coffee!

  3. Oh my goodness, my child has started doing this thing where when we have company (seldom anymore), she says things like, “Mom, tell the story about [x].” I guess I tell the same stories about my life too often or something…

    1. Haha, that is amusing – children are so funny with the things they notice and the unexpectedness of their responses. Thanks for stopping in, hope you have a great week.
