The Rain

The forest looked different this morning after days of rain. The eerie feeling hadn’t washed away but instead was magnified by a heavy silence. The branches on the trees pulled towards the ground and with no wind to stir them it felt oppressive and suffocating. The small snippets of sky that could be seen were a mix of dull grey clouds slightly highlighted by a sun that couldn’t be seen. The foliage along the ground held tiny drops of rain; soft glistening water beads that suggested beauty could be found anywhere.

The path was narrow and water from the vegetation dampened our cloaks as we made our way by. The ground under foot was damp and soggy. Small clumps of mud rose and fell with each step. It was such a sharp contrast to the dry dust that puffed up under foot just a few day ago. The power of a good rain is truly amazing. However, I was fearful that our trail would be too easy to track in rich mud and I was eager to be out of the forests and onto the paths that the sun and winds could alter with speed. For now all I could do was hope that the rains had delayed their travel as well because if it hadn’t they would be upon us in no time and that meant….
